The perfect simple green smoothie! I love green smoothies, but the ingredients can get complicated and expensive. I created this green smoothie recipe because I wanted a recipe with ingredients that are readily available and also inexpensive. There is no need for fancy additives or expensive milk substitutes in this recipe (although if you have them on hand you are welcome to add them in!).

Green Smoothie Ingredients

  • Banana – 1 banana (freeze first for a thicker smoothie)
  • Apple – 1 apple, sliced (I use green, but you can select a sweeter variety if you prefer)
  • Celery – 2 stocks, roughly chopped
  • Spinach – 1 large handful of washed spinach
  • Ginger – 1 small piece of ginger, peeled and chopped
  • Liquid – 1 cup water (or your milk of choice)
  • Ice – 1 cup of ice (you can add less if your banana is frozen)
  • Lemon juice – lemon juice to taste (I add about half a lemon’s worth)
  • Optional – I like to add a bit of honey to offset the sour

Green Smoothie Instructions

Step 1 – Prepare your ingredients. Your apple and celery should be chopped into medium-sized pieces. Leave the peel on your apple for nutrients! You won’t notice the peel once it’s blended. Your ginger should be peeled and chopped into small chunks.

Step 2 – Put all your prepared ingredients into your blender. Add lemon juice (and honey if you prefer) to taste. I usually add about a half a lemon’s worth of lemon juice and about a teaspoon of honey. I used a green apple in this recipe, which tend to be more sour. If I was using a sweeter variety of apple I might skip the honey.

Step 3 – Add your liquid and ice. I used one cup of water and one cup of ice. You can adjust the amount of liquid depending on how thick you like your smoothies. You may also need to add less or more liquid depending on the size of your fruit.

Step 4 – Blend until smooth.

Step 5 – Enjoy!
