It’s been almost a whole year of on and off lockdowns keeping us apart from our loved ones. With Covid-19 restricting who we can and can’t see, these days long distance relationships are more and more common. It can be tough to keep things exciting with your partner when all of your dates have to be online. This list of virtual date ideas will help you spice up your long distance relationship!

9 Virtual Date Ideas to Try with Your Partner
1. Cook or order the same meal
Pick out a recipe and then both make your rendition over a video call. Then sit down and eat over the call together. You could make it into a contest to see who’s dish turns out the best. If you aren’t big on cooking, you could both order in the same type of cuisine and then pretend you are both at the same restaurant. You could even dress up your video call backgrounds to look more like a restaurant.
2. Play video games
Pick out a PC or console game that you like to play together and make a date out of it. You could go on a fishing date in Animal Crossing or build your dream home together in Minecraft. You can also play online versions of board games or card games.
3. Watch a movie
Have a movie night over the internet. Video call apps like Zoom, Skype, and Facebook Messenger allow you to share your screen and sound so you can watch movies or TV shows together. You can also sync your Netflix players together by downloading the Teleparty plug-in for Google Chrome.
4. Look at house listings
I might be alone on this one, but I find it really fun to look at houses that are for sale in different places around the world. This can be a fun date idea where you send links to listings you like and try to find your dream home or vacation home. It’s also a way to virtually explore different places since travel isn’t possible right now. This can also be a way to plan for when you can be with your partner again, as you will learn each other’s preferences in a home.
5. Plan your dream couple’s vacation
Plan a really elaborate vacation that you want to take together. Where would you go when it’s finally safe to travel and see each other again? Make a bucket list of all the places you want to see together.
6. Hang out in an internet chatroom style game
A nostalgic online date that my partner and I had during quarantine was playing Club Penguin together. You can explore the virtual island together with your penguin avatars and play simple games together as well. Did you play any games like this when you were young? Check and see if they still exist. Maybe your partner had a similar childhood experience. A bonus to these chatroom style games is that they are usually free to play.
7. Follow an art tutorial together
Watch the same drawing, painting, or craft tutorial together and see how your results compare. You could make it like a contest or just use the time to relax together. YouTube is full of tutorials, so you’re bond to find one perfect for your resources and skillsets.
8. Share photos
Take some time to look back at your old photos together, or share your favorite childhood photos with each other. You can take turns sending photos back and forth, or take turns sharing your screens with each other to share large numbers of photos.
9. Go for a walk while on the phone
You can exercise together even though you’re still physically apart. Talk on the phone while you both go for walks. You can take photos of what you see to share with each other. You could even make it into a game by creating a photo scavenger hunt and seeing who can collect photos of all the items the fastest.
